68 - Al-Qalam ()

(1) 1. (The Qur’an is in the Arabic language which consists of Arabic letters such as:) Noon. (Yet no one can produce even the shortest Chapter of the miraculous wonder of the Qur’an.) I (Allah) swear by the Pen, and that which they write (therewith of useful knowledge leading to the Path of Guidance. And what the angels write of Divine Revelation, or the deeds of mankind),

(2) 2. By the Favor of your Lord (Allah), you are not (O Prophet Muhammad) possessed (I.e., influenced by an evil spirit).

(3) 3. And most surely you shall have a reward that will never end.

(4) 4. And most surely you are of a great moral character.

(5) 5. So you shall see, and they (too) will see,

(6) 6. Which of you is the afflicted (by the devils).

(7) 7. Surely your Lord (Allah) knows best him who has gone astray from His Way, and He knows best those who are (rightly) guided.

(8) 8. So do not obey the deniers (of the Truth).

(9) 9. They wish that you would compromise  (in the fundamentals of Islam) so they (too) would compromise (to meet in the middle, between belief and unbelief).

(10) 10. And obey not every worthless habitual swearer,

(11) 11. A slanderer, going about with malicious gossip,

(12) 12. Withholder of good, transgressing and sinful,

(13) 13. Cruel, and besides all that, base-born;

(14) 14. (He was so) because he had wealth and children.

(15) 15. When Our Verses (of The Qur'an) are recited to him, he says: Tales of the ancients.

(16) 16. We shall brand him upon the snout.

(17) 17. Surely We shall try them as We tried the owners of the garden, when they swore that they would certainly cut the harvest in the morning,

(18) 18. And were not willing to set aside a portion (for the poor).

(19) 19. Then there encompassed it (the garden) an affliction from (Allah) your Lord, while they were sleeping.

(20) 20. So it became as a black, barren land.

(21) 21. And they called out to each other in the morning,

(22) 22. Saying: Go early to your crop if you would reap (the harvest).

(23) 23. So they departed, lowering their voices to one another, and saying:

(24) 24. No poor man shall enter it today upon you.

(25) 25. And in the morning they went strong in (this unjust) resolve.

(26) 26. But when they saw it (the garden utterly destroyed), they said: Most surely we have gone astray (from the right way),

(27) 27. Rather! We are deprived (of the fruits).

(28) 28. The best of them said: Did I not say to you, Why do you not praise highly and glorify (Allah)?

(29) 29. They said: Glory (and Honor) be to (Allah) our Lord, surely we were unjust.

(30) 30. Then some of them advanced against others, blaming each other.

(31) 31. They said: Woe to us! Surely we were transgressors.

(32) 32. Perhaps (Allah) our Lord will substitute for us a better (garden) than it; surely to (Allah) our Lord do we (turn in repentance and) make our humble petition.

(33) 33. Such is the chastisement (in this life), and certainly the Chastisement of the Hereafter is more grievous - if they only knew.

(34) 34. Surely those who keep to the Commandments of Allah and guard against evil, shall have gardens of Bliss near their Lord (Allah).

(35) 35. Shall We then make those who surren- der themselves to (Allah) as the wicked.

(36) 36. What is the matter with you? How do you judge?

(37) 37. Or have you a Scripture in which you learn,

(38) 38. That you have surely therein what you choose?

(39) 39. Or have you received from (Allah) an agreement confirmed by an oath extending to the Day of Resurrection that you shall surely have what you demand?

(40) 40. Ask them, which of them will stand surety for that,

(41) 41. Or have they associate gods (who intercede with Allah on their behalf)? Then let them bring their associate gods, if they are truthful.

(42) 42. On the Day when the Shin (of Allah) will be uncovered, and they will be called upon to prostrate, but they (the disbelievers and hypocrites) will not be able to (as they failed to do so willingly in this life),

(43) 43. Their eyes cast down, humiliation will cover them; and indeed they were called upon to prostrate, while they were sound (of health and able to prostrate).

(44) 44. So leave Me and him who denies this (Divine) Statement (this Qur’an); We shall gradually lead them (to a Torment), from where they perceive not.

(45) 45. And I will give them time. Surely, My Plan is firm.

(46) 46. Or do you ask from them a payment  (for the Message), so that they are burdened with debt?

(47) 47. Or have they (the knowledge of) the unseen, so that they write it down.

(48) 48. So wait patiently for the Judgment of (Allah) your Lord, and be not like the companion of the fish (the Prophet Jonah), when he cried out (to Allah) while he was in distress.

(49) 49. Had it not that Favor from his Lord (Allah) had reached him, he would certainly have been cast forth upon that barren shore while he was blameworthy.

(50) 50. But his Lord (Allah) chose him, and He made him of the righteous.

(51) 51. And those who disbelieve would almost smite you with their eyes when they hear the Reminder (the Qur’an), and they say: Most surely he is possessed (by a spirit).

(52) 52. But it (this Qur’an) is not except a Message (from Allah) to all the nations.
