(1) 1. He (the Prophet) frowned and turned (his) back,
(2) 2. Because there came to him the blind man (i.e., Abdullah ibn Umm Maktum interrupting, while seeking Guidance, and the Prophet was preoccupied in inviting the notables of Quraysh to Islam).
(3) 3. But what would make you perceive that he (the blind man) might be purified?
(4) 4. Or be reminded, and the Reminder might benefit him?
(5) 5. As for the one who considers himself free from need (of Divine Guidance),
(6) 6. To him you give attention.
(7) 7. And no blame is on you, if he will not purify himself,
(8) 8. But as to the one who comes to you striving hard (to be guided),
(9) 9. And is in Awe (and Reverence before Allah),
(10) 10. From him will you divert yourself.
(11) 11. No! But surely it (the Qur’an) is a Reminder and an Admonition.
(12) 12. So let him who wills remember it.
(13) 13. (It is) held (greatly) in honored scripts,
(14) 14. Exalted, purified,
(15) 15. In the hands of scribes (angels).
(16) 16. Noble and virtuous.
(17) 17. Cursed is man (the disbeliever). How ungrateful is he!
(18) 18. Of what thing did (Allah) create him?
(19) 19. Out of a drop of semen; He created him, then He destined for him,
(20) 20. Then (as for) the way (i.e., his exit from his mother's womb, or his course of life or the Way to true Guidance), He made easy for him,
(21) 21. Then He causes him to die, and then assigns to him a grave;
(22) 22. Then when He wills, He will raise him to life again.
(23) 23. Nay! But he has not done what He (Allah) commanded him.
(24) 24. Then let man consider (the source of) his food,
(25) 25. That We (Allah) pour down the water, pouring (it) down in abundance,
(26) 26. Then We cleave the earth, cleaving (it) asunder,
(27) 27. Then We cause to grow therein the grain,
(28) 28. And grapes and clover,
(29) 29. And the olive and the palm,
(30) 30. And thick gardens,
(31) 31. And fruits and grasses -
(32) 32. A provision for you and for your cattle.
(33) 33. But when the Deafening Blast (the second Blowing of the Trumpet) comes,
(34) 34. The Day on which a man shall flee from his brother,
(35) 35. And his mother and father,
(36) 36. And his wife and children.
(37) 37. Every one of them will on that Day have an affair which will occupy him.
(38) 38. (Some) faces on that Day will be bright,
(39) 39. Laughing and joyous.
(40) 40. And (other) faces on that Day, on them will be dust,
(41) 41. Darkness will cover them.
(42) 42. These it is who are the disbelievers, the wicked ones.
