(1) 1. When the sun is folded up,

(2) 2. And when the stars darken,

(3) 3. And when the mountains shall be set in motion,

(4) 4. And when the pregnant camels nearing delivery (i.e., the most valued of one’s possessions) shall be neglected,

(5) 5. And when the wild beasts are herded together,

(6) 6. And when the seas boil over (or overflow into each other),

(7) 7. And when the souls are joined (like with like, or are reunited with their bodies),

(8) 8. And when the female infant buried alive (right after birth by the pagans during the age of ignorance, or aborted for fear of poverty) is asked,

(9) 9. For what sin she was killed,

(10) 10. And when the scrolls (of man’s deeds) are spread,

(11) 11. And when the sky shall be unveiled,

(12) 12. And when Hell is set ablaze,

(13) 13. And when Paradise is brought near (to the righteous),

(14) 14. Every soul shall (then) know what it has prepared (for itself of good or bad).

(15) 15. So I (Allah) swear by the orbiting planets,

(16) 16. That run their courses (and) set,

(17) 17. And by the night when it ends,

(18) 18. And by the morning when it breathes:

(19) 19. Most surely it (the Qur’an) is a Word (conveyed by) a gracious Messenger (Gabriel),

(20) 20. Endowed with power, given by (Allah) the Lord of the (Great) Throne,

(21) 21. Obeyed (by the other angels), and moreover trustworthy.

(22) 22. And (O people) your companion (the prophet Muhammad) is not (at all) possessed (or influenced by a spirit).

(23) 23. And indeed he saw him (Gabriel) on the clear horizon.

(24) 24. And he does not withhold concerning (the Knowledge of) the unseen.

(25) 25. Nor is it (this Qur’an) the word of the accursed Satan;

(26) 26. So where are you going?

(27) 27. It (the Qur’an) is but a Reminder to (all) the nations,

(28) 28. For him among you who wills to take the right Way (of Islam).

(29) 29. And you cannot will, except as Allah wills, the Lord of all that exists (of mankind, jinn, angels, etc.)
